October 19, 2009That’s how the ‘balloon boy’ brouhaha is turning out to be, a huge TV sham, when many on boobtube seem to be all gas.
Falcon Heene and his parents drew worldwide attention when on international TV, they faked what appeared to be a very serious and grave incident, the boy purportedly got accidentally brought into the air by a fancy giant balloon.
It turned out the boy was just hiding in their house’s attic all that time.
Police authorities are set to arrest the boy’s parents for staging what could be the cruelest joke on TV, and that would be the costliest stunt for them if they got prosecuted.
The vision of a shiny, mushroom-shaped balloon swept aloft kept viewers spellbound, breathless and (let’s face it) titillated. On-air commentators and experts kept busy speculating on how fast and far it might fly, when it might come down, and how much damage might result when it did. Meanwhile, voices were raised that maybe the child wasn’t on board after all, raising questions of whether the boy had fallen from the balloon — introducing another potentially tragic set of circumstances.
The parents, Richard and Mayumi Heene, met in a Hollywood acting school and “put on a very good show for us,” Alderden said. Authorities know there was “a conspiracy” between them, he added.
He said charges are expected to be filed in the case.
The couple’s attorney told CNN affiliate KMGH that he hasn’t seen any evidence beyond “speculation,” but the Heenes would turn themselves in if charges are filed.
“All I’m saying if you’ve got some reason to arrest him, let me know, he’ll turn himself in,” said Denver attorney David Lane referring to Richard Heene. “If you got the goods, just tell me.”
The sheriff said investigators also want to interview 25-year-old researcher Robert Thomas who worked with Richard Heene for about two months last spring. Thomas was paid by Gawker.com — a popular gossip site — to write about his experience with Heene for a story published on Saturday.

“Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs,” the animated tale of an island rained on by junk food, fell to sixth place, earning 8.1 million dollars in box office receipts.
Tongue-in-cheek comedy “Zombieland” came in seventh place, earning 7.8 million dollars.
Falling to the eighth spot was the 3-D format re-release of popular Pixar cartoons “Toy Story” and “Toy Story 2,” which took in a combined three million dollars. The films came ahead of the much-anticipated “Toy Story 3,” due out next year.
Futuristic Bruce Willis action film “Surrogates” — about people living their lives through sexy robot replicas of themselves — took ninth place with 1.92 million dollars.
In 10th place was “The Invention of Lying,” which stars British comedian Ricky Gervais and Jennifer Garner as a couple living in an alternative reality where nobody ever lies. The film took in 1.9 million dollars.

Good news for those yearning for new and classy Wordpress themes. Woo Themes has just released Rockstar Theme by Adii Rockstar.
It is said that this theme was not free to download previously, no wonder that it looks as sleek as any premium theme available out there.
At a glance, Rockstar is so eye-candy and so catchy that it can be described as ultimately desirable.
The background especially inputs a seminal retro-look that is so original and unique both at the same time.
Only problem is that the designer did not put in the very vital search section or module. But hey, Google Search would be so willing to help.

October 15, 2009Zune Pass Apple has long maintained that people want to own rather than rent their music. I counter that a subscription-based music service, combined with a state-of-the-art player, is one of those features that you have to try before you realize how fantastic it is. It reminds me of the first time I beta-tested the Xbox Live gaming service back in 2002–I didn’t understand how addictive online console gaming could be until I spent eight hours playing Moto GP without even looking at the clock.
The first thing you’ll notice — the first thing everyone notices — is just how incredibly sexy the Zune HD is. The sleek casing and big, glossy touchscreen is a far cry from previous devices in the line. The body of the player is a sandwich of brushed metal bread with plastic “meat” through the center. On the face of the device is a tall and thin 3.3-inch OLED display and a lean home button at the southern end of the panel. The back is slightly curved on the edges and fastened with four prominent, industrial screws. On the bottom of the device there’s a Zune adapter port and 3.5mm headphone jack, while the top houses a power / sleep button, and a “media” button lives on the left-hand side of the unit (more on that later). All in all, the package is smartly put together, and while it sometimes felt a bit light (or not quite there) in the hand, we have few complaints about its build and style. It’s one of the more mature offerings Microsoft has made to the gadget world — and we’re taken with it.
These are the kinds of music-discovery features that make the Zune Pass a great deal at $14.99 a month. And on top of that, each month you get 10 MP3 downloads to keep.
Quickplay This feature lets you “pin” favorite songs, albums, playlists, or other types of content to the front menu of the Zune HD. It also has a “New” section that automatically displays the six items you’ve most recently added to your collection, a “History” section that displays the last six things you’ve played, and a spot to access any currently playing song that you’ve paused. I miss this instant gratification, particularly quick access to recently added music, on the iPod.
Background art Remember how cool it seemed when you could first look at album covers as you played songs on your MP3 player? The Zune HD makes this seem hopelessly obsolete–instead, it scrolls through album art and pictures of the artist as each song plays. No purchase is required–it works even with the LPs I ripped. It’s similar to how the Zune software (and iTunes) can populate your music collection with album art from a database in the cloud, only more sophisticated. (You can see this feature in action starting around 2:00 into this video demo.)
Wireless sync This feature has been part of the Zune experience since 2007, and once you get used to it, you’ll hate dragging your iPod to your computer every time you want to load new music. Microsoft seems to have improved the sync experience in the Zune HD and Zune 4.0 software–all you have to do is leave the Zune HD’s wireless connection on, and it will periodically sync automatically with your PC, even if you don’t have the Zune app open.

British pop star Leona Lewis, who broke through stateside in 2007 with her Grammy-nominated hit “Bleeding Love,” got a rude welcome at a Picadilly bookstore Wednesday afternoon in London. The singer was was signing copies of her new autobiography, “Dreams,” when she was slapped in the face by a member of the crowd. The assailant was arrested and Lewis was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
A man has been arrested after singer Leona Lewis was “punched in the head” at a signing session for her autobiography in central London.
The X Factor star was hit as she signed copies of Dreams for fans, her spokesman said.
The 24-year-old had been meeting members of the public at Waterstone’s in Piccadilly for around an hour-and-a-half when a man who had been waiting in the queue lashed out.
“Leona was the victim of an unprovoked attack this afternoon at her book signing,” the spokesman said.
“The police were called immediately and medical attention has been sought.

October 13, 2009This has already been blogged about overnight - first by TMZ, then What Would Tyler Durden Do and Idolator - but it’s worth mentioning as a postscript to yesterday’s review of Michael Jackson’s ‘This Is It’, supposedly a ‘new song’ but actually nothing of the sort.
Turns out Jackson co-wrote it back in 1983 with former teen heartthrob Paul Anka. And now Anka’s peeved because he’s not been credited, and is threatening to sue.
“This Is It” was originally recorded by Jackson in a spartan piano-and-vocal version, fleshed out here with strings and swooping backup vocals courtesy of Jackson’s brothers. It’s a sweet, swaying, rather pedestrian number. It is also, to Jackson aficionados, eerily familiar, bearing an uncanny resemblance to “I Never Heard,” a song co-written by Jackson and Paul Anka that appeared on a 1991 album by the R & B singer Sa-Fire. In fact, the two songs are identical.
A lot of questions got resolved yesterday about the new Michael Jackson single “This Is It” — in particular, exactly who wrote the tune. (The answer apparently being Jackson and veteran singer-songwriter Paul Anka.) But you may still be wondering just who is Safire, the singer who originally recorded the track when it was called “I Never Heard.”
Watch Video:
Safire was born Wilma Cosme on the island of San Juan, Puerto Rico, and subsequently moved to New York’s Spanish Harlem. In the late ‘80s, she recorded a clutch of singles for Cutting Records and became a leading light of the on-the-rise Latin hip-hop/freestyle scene (a largely regional phenomenon whose ranks yielded stars like Stevie B, Exposé, and Lisa Lisa and Cult Jam).

Irish boy-band star Stephen Gately died of natural causes, not from binge drinking or drug consumption, Spanish police said. Autopsy results from Gately’s unexpected death during a vacation in Majorca, Spain, were revealed at a court hearing today.
Officials told the court that Gately, 33, suffered a pulmonary oedema, or a build up of fluid in the lungs, which ultimately results in respiratory failure. The condition is usually caused by damage to lung tissue or circulation problems.
Police would not confirm whether Gately had been drinking or taking drugs before his death but ruled them out as causes of his death.
Spanish authorities now say a mystery heart problem killed former Boyzone star Stephen Gately.
Gately, who died on vacation in Majorca at the weekend, died from pulmonary oedema, a build-up of fluid on the lungs.
But Spanish investigators are no closer to figuring out what caused the fatal build-up.
A pulmonary oedema can indicate an underlying heart condition but family members have said that Gately was in good health.
Overdoses of drugs such as cocaine and even non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines have also been linked to pulmonary edema.
The toxicology reports are still pending but Irish celebrity lawyer Gerald Kean says that Stephen’s death had nothing to do with a drug overdose or binge drinking.
“We are not saying he was not drinking but eight hours is not something we accept,” Kean said.
“He was a very sensible man. He enjoyed himself, he loved life. I was with him many a night and, if anything, late into nights he would look as though he had just arrived.”
Kean, speaking on behalf of Gately’s family, said the family just wanted to get Stephen home.
“The family’s only wish is to get their son and brother home as soon as possible.”

After a database problem knocked out the accounts of about 150,000 Facebook users for more than a week, the social networking site said today that most are now back up and running.
Despit the fix, many of the 150,000 users affected by the problem are still expressing frustration and anger with the social network.
The account problems were caused by “several technical issues” with a single database, Brandee Barker, a Facebook spokeswoman, told Computerworld in an e-mail. Barker didn’t provide details on what caused the problem, but said that the issues have been corrected.
Thousands of Facebook users who have been unable to access their accounts for nearly a week and a half now are now seeing their profiles restored–but some data related to recent profile updates may have been lost.
What happened? According to Facebook, the replacement of profiles and login screens with a “down for maintenance” notice–which appears to have started on October 3–stemmed from “a technical issue with a single database.” The company has stressed that there is no chance that it was due to hackers or other malicious activity.
In response to user complaints, Facebook posted a note on its site on Oct. 6, about three days after the first account was dropped. “We are experiencing a technical issue with one of our databases that is resulting in an extended period of maintenance for some of you. We are working on a fix and hope to have this resolved in the next 24 hours,” noted the post.
The message didn’t go over well with a lot of users who didn’t see any progress over the next 24 hours or even in another week. The Oct. 6 message was facebook’s only update about the situation.

Atahualpa version 3.4.4 is a very white and seminal minimalist Wordpress theme with a exemplary Ajax application, making it highly-dynamic and flexible both at the same time.
The header picture in fact stretches and narrow according to browser size and cycles with each upload.
The green logo at the right-corner portion of the page is ultimately unique and crisp. That alone makes this theme so worthwhile.

October 8, 2009At $279 per pop, Amazon has finally released its e-reader on Wednesday. This launch is expected to spur a new wave of patronage for digital content over the Internet, making e-content like newspapers and e-books easily downloadable from anywhere in the world.
The price is a little bit high considering that Kindle 1 is available for only $149. Maybe teh add-ons and program updates will cover for the steep increase.
Or else, why bother buying the pricey one?
But still, a Kindle in your hand could make that new Robert Langdon novel much more fun, without hiking off to a bookstore downtown, which could not be always possible to busy souls out there.

Welcome the Sony’s new laptop introduction with Vaio X. It is touted to be the the lightest in its class at 1.6 pounds in total weight and measures 7.29 inches by 10.95 inches by 0.55 inches. It has an amazing thinness of merely half an inch.
Vaio X is marketed as an ultra-portable laptop with a hefty price of $1,300. Buyers would get all the convenience for that reasonably higher than market pricing.
The touchpad offers multitouch functionality, allowing you to use finger gestures to zoom, rotate items, and scroll. The LED-backlit screen measures 11.1 inches (diagonal) and has a resolution of 1,366 by 768. The keyboard has a 17-mm key pitch.
The X Series features a 2-GHz Intel processor, 2 GB of DDR2 memory, an inte-grated Intel graphics chipset, and a 128-GB solid state drive. The system features a multimedia card reader, two USB 2.0 ports, and an Ethernet port, as well as a built-in webcam with face-tracking technology. Wireless capability includes 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The X Series lines also comes with 3G mobile broadband built in, though you’ll have to get a separate Verizon Wireless subscrip-tion to use it. Interestingly enough, the X Series also comes with real-time GPS functionality.
All models feature both VGA and HDMI outputs, however there are two graphics options, one is a NVIDIA GeForce GT230M 512MB and the other is for the NVIDIA GeForce GT210M 256MB.
Other things worth mentioning include three USB 2.0 ports, an ExpressCard 34 slot, FireWire, memory card slots and a range of colors to choose from which include red, pink, blue, white and black.

And there’s that cute little bird drawing on the right corner of the page design and for that merely, this theme is so worth trying.

October 7, 2009A medical breakthrough has just been gained with the release of the Swine Flu H1N1 vaccine, when everyone thought it was not forthcoming anymore, driving many into panic everytime the pandemic disease strikes, in every corner of the world.
Hospitals in Indianapolis and Memphis are first to receive the test vials and would be implementing it soon.
However, most Americans are wary about the use of the Swine Flu vaccine, specially that it had the feeling of being railroaded, to catch up with time as the disease was still fast spreading.
Possible side effects are localized problems at the injection site, including tenderness, pain, redness, swelling, and bruising. There were also some more encompassing reactions reported, by less than half of those in the testing. These included headache, malaise, muscle pain, chills, nausea, fever, and vomiting. Most the these reports were mild, with a few being moderate, and less than 1 percent being severe.
Very negative side effects were not really reported to have occurred on the testing stage, and deaths were not one of the resulting circumstances.

Okay, we’ve seen already quite a number of previous cellphone models that acts and stimulates a full computer on the palm of the hand but E71, in a glance could be just the first-ever unit that truly epitomizes full functionality computing in one’s hand, especially with the QWERTY keypad right below the screen, not on another flap or fold, but right in front, just like a notebook or a laptop.
With WIFI capability and long-battery life, E71 could just be as good as a notebook, only more convenient to be slipped into a pocket.
There’s just a downside with its 3.15 megapixel camera which many test-users had a problem with while sound quality is just average.
But all in all, E71 is touted to be the best of its kind coming from Nokia’s new line of cellphones.

This might sound like a joke but Frederick Paul over there at Information Week believes it should be, at least for many Vista users who felt cheated when Vista proved to be a failure and that it would be unfair if XP users have the same upgrade price as their.
In an ‘open letter’ to Microsoft, Paul further argued:
More importantly, Microsoft can afford it. In the long run, Vista upgrades will be a small portion of overall Windows 7 sales. And by recognizing and rewarding its most loyal customers, Microsoft could reap a public relations windfall while finally outdoing rivals Apple and Google. Heck, it probably wouldn’t be long before Microsoft made it all back, and more.
Of course in reality heeding Mr. Paul’s complaining would cost Microsoft millions of dollars in revenues and that’ll make everything far-fetched.
But hey, we can dream sometimes, can’t we?
